DIY: Satin Ribbon Butterflies

Looking for some fun projects to do alongside your kids? Well, with just a few supplies and a couple of simple steps, you can not only have a fun DIY project to work on with them, but you can also make some customizable decorations, perfect for attaching to apparel or party centerpieces. Making some satin ribbon butterflies would be the ideal way to use that leftover fabric, but if you don't have any yourself, you can always get some quality satin from IdeaRibbon and get to work on making some fun DIY crafts. Wouldn’t it be cool to show off the decorations your kids made to your guests?

  1. The first thing you'll want to do is grab a few different colors of satin fabric. It isn't required that they're different colors to build the butterflies, but they'll certainly look better when they're finished. This satin fabric should be divided into three strips of varying width. One piece will be 4 cm wide while the other two should only be 2.5 cm wide.
  1. You’ll then take one of those 2.5 cm wide strips of satin fabric and cut it down to a 5 cm length. Fold this strip in half so that the two ends are touching. Then take the other 2.5 cm wide strip and cut it down to a 6 cm length. Fold this longer strip over the first one so that its points are touching.
  1. Now that you have the inner layers done take your 4 cm wide strip of fabric and cut it lengthwise. The exact length will depend on the size of the previous two pieces, but you'll want it a little bit longer than the last strip, enough to cover both inner layers and leave just a hair of extra fabric when the two points are brought together.
  1. Repeat steps 1-3 until you have 4 different fabric folds to work with. Once you have all the pieces finished, you'll then set them so that the points of the folds meet up and overlap. Then take a bit of ribbon and tie them all together to secure them in place.

There you go! Just a few minutes with your kids and some extra pieces of fabric and you can make your beautiful decorative pieces to add to your parties. You can even go a step further and customize them with pearls or ribbons to make them appear even more spectacular. You get to have some fun with your kids and make some fantastic display pieces.
